To young people still in school:
We love reading other writers’ stories and this week we would like to tell you about:
Letters from the Lighthouse
by Emma Carroll

This story is a page turner, if you like codes and mysteries. We struggled to break the code before the story told us how to, but we weren’t thinking in the right way, so perhaps you’ll do better.
Letters From the Lighthouse is set during the second World War and follows Olive and Cliff who are evacuated to stay in a lighthouse in Devon where an unexpected secret mission lies waiting.
Where is their older sister, Sukie?
Why is the other evacuee, Esther, so horrible all the time?
All this is set against the bombings of London and defiance against Hitler’s terrorism.
To teachers:
A story worth including on any reading list for middle grade students – covering prejudice, isolation, violence, hope, fear, family and justice.
The writing flows easily and the voice is convincing.
